I have no experience of K1000 but have heard that it is good. Openbook is superb and I would never use anything else. It is very versatile and allows you to scan magazines, books and of course just normal written matterial. Openbook depends on which scanner you buy, some work better with it than others. You can get a list of supported scanners from the openbook pages on Freedom scientifics website. I scan books all the time and have no complaints at all with this product.

I've used both, and personally think OpenBook is easier to use, especially when reading a document. Kurzweil seems to mainly use the function keys, while OpenBook uses the number pad and arrow keys for reading. Also, at least with OpenBook, it does depend on the actual scanner, as some can be faster which would save time when scanning. However, I do like the ability to use different voices than just the ones used for JAWS Eloquence when using Kurzweil.

Although they are both good programs, I prefer kurzweil over openbook. First off, the PDF scanner in k1000 seems to work better. Secondly, here in the us at least, it's much cheeper to buy an upgrade of k1000 than it is openbook. The only time I would recommend openbook over k1000 is if u r running a slower computer, meaning one with a 500 MHZ processor and/or less than 128mb of ram. Oh yeah, and one other thing: k1000 does not offer support for braille displays, so if u need/want to use a display with k1000, u need to leave whatever screen reader you have running to drive the display. Yet another reason to only run k1000 on only faster machines. If u have any other questions about these pieces of software, drop me a message.

thanks for the reply. personally i did tried this programs with other pc. i found out that k1000 is faster compare to open book when scanning a thick book and its more acurate than open book. i'm gonna get one of the two programs soon. just hope can have more opeanion about these two programs and the differences. in Malaysia, not much of the usage for k1000 if compare to open book. that's why, i can't really get someone tell me about the differences.
